Meet Doctor B

from Rutherford to Newberg

Dr. Bisant Labib has spent her career helping people see clearly. She’s an optometrist, a professor and today the dean of Pacific University’s College of Optometry. In her kitchen in Newberg, Oregon, she’s Doctor B, and every cake she makes starts from scratch with organic, all-natural ingredients.

Chapter one

Jersey roots

Bisant grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey, a close-knit borough just outside New York City. She earned her bachelor’s degree close to home, then headed to the Pennsylvania College of Optometry outside Philadelphia, where she earned her Doctor of Optometry in 2014 and completed a residency in primary care and ocular disease at The Eye Institute.

Chapter two

A career built on care

She stayed on at the college and kept climbing, from resident to faculty member to full professor. She co-led the primary care service at The Eye Institute, directed the clinical internship program and served as associate dean of academic affairs, helping shape the education of a generation of eye doctors.

Along the way she lectured across the country, wrote a regular column for Review of Optometry and published widely on eye disease. It’s the same eye for detail she now brings to every cake.

  • 12th Diplomate of the Academy’s Comprehensive Eye Care section

  • Dean, Pacific University College of Optometry (2025)

chapter three

A diagnosis, and a long road back

In 2021, worsening neck pain and sudden bouts of facial pain led to an MRI and a shock: a large tumor growing inside her spinal cord. That August she underwent a delicate, hours-long surgery in New York with spine surgeon Dr. Paul McCormick at Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian, who removed the tumor completely.

Recovery took everything she had. Within days she was up with a walker, and by the end of the year she was running and driving again. But the fine motor skills an eye doctor relies on needed more time to come back.

Chapter four

Healing in the kitchen

So she went to the kitchen. Measuring flour, cracking eggs, folding batter and piping buttercream became her therapy: patient, careful work that steadied her hands and lifted her spirits.

What started as therapy became a joy, and the people she baked for kept asking for more. In 2023, Doctor B Bakes was born, with a little bee in a chef’s hat as its seal.

Chapter five

A new hometown in Newberg

In 2025, Bisant was named dean of Pacific University’s College of Optometry and traded the East Coast for Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Today she and Doctor B Bakes call Newberg home, baking for neighbors from Hillsboro and Beaverton to Dundee and McMinnville.

Same doctor, same careful hands, a little more buttercream.
